Strong Through the Season: Why Autumn Is the Perfect Time to Invest in You

October has arrived.

The mornings are darker, the evenings are drawing in, the temperature has dropped… and suddenly the sofa, a blanket and an early night can seem far more appealing than putting on your trainers.

And do you know what?

That’s completely normal.

But this time of year doesn’t have to mean putting your health and fitness on hold until January.

In fact, October might just be one of the best times to start looking after yourself.

You Don’t Need January

We put so much pressure on January.

New year. New goals. New diet. New exercise plan. New version of ourselves.

But why wait?

There are still three whole months of the year ahead of us.

Imagine reaching January already feeling stronger, moving better and having established habits that actually fit into your life.

No dramatic resolutions required.

Just small, consistent choices starting now.

Your Body Still Needs Strength

As women, particularly as we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, strength training becomes increasingly important.

It isn’t simply about changing how our bodies look.

Being strong helps us with everyday life.

Carrying the shopping. Getting up from the floor. Climbing stairs. Maintaining balance. Supporting our joints. Keeping doing the things we love.

Muscle really is something worth protecting as we age.

And you certainly don’t need to spend hours in a gym to do it.

A couple of well-planned sessions each week can be a brilliant place to start.

Movement Counts — Even When Motivation Doesn’t Show Up

Here’s something I tell people all the time:

You don’t need to feel motivated before you move.

Some days you’ll arrive at a class full of energy.

Other days you’ll arrive tired, stressed or wondering why on earth you booked it.

Those sessions count too.

Actually, sometimes they’re the ones that matter most.

You don’t need every workout to be your best workout.

You simply need to keep showing up.

Find Movement You Actually Enjoy

Exercise shouldn’t feel like punishment.

And it certainly doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.

You might love lifting weights.

You might prefer Pilates.

You might enjoy a faster-paced workout where you leave feeling like you’ve conquered the world.

Or you might need a combination of all three.

The best exercise programme isn’t necessarily the fanciest one.

It’s the one you enjoy enough to keep doing.

That’s why I love offering different styles of training at Flow & Strength with Sharon. There should be space for strength, mobility, fitness, confidence, laughter and community.

Because movement is about far more than calories burned.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Community

One of my favourite things about our classes has nothing to do with squats, dumbbells or Pilates balls.

It’s the people.

It’s walking through the door and someone knowing your name.

It’s laughing halfway through an exercise.

It’s encouraging the person next to you.

It’s occasionally glaring at me when I announce there’s another round. 😂

And it’s leaving feeling better than when you arrived.

That sense of belonging matters.

Especially during the darker months when it can become very easy to retreat indoors and become less active.

Sometimes the hardest part really is getting through the door.

Once you’re there, we’ll take care of the rest.

Make October Your Month of Consistency

So instead of setting yourself a huge October challenge, try something simpler.

Choose one promise to yourself.

Maybe you’ll attend two classes each week.

Maybe you’ll start strength training.

Maybe you’ll walk more.

Maybe you’ll finally try Pilates.

Maybe you’ll stop thinking you have to be “fit enough” before joining a class.

Or perhaps your goal is simply to move your body regularly and appreciate what it can do.

Small things repeated consistently become big things.

StrongHER Isn’t About Being Perfect

This is something I’m becoming more passionate about all the time.

Being strong isn’t about having the perfect body.

It isn’t about exercising seven days a week.

And it definitely isn’t about comparing yourself with the woman standing next to you.

It’s about building a body that supports the life you want to live.

It’s about confidence.

Independence.

Resilience.

Health.

And recognising that taking time to look after yourself isn’t selfish — it’s an investment in your future self.

So this October, while the seasons are changing around us, maybe we can change the way we think about exercise too.

Don’t wait for January.

Don’t wait until life becomes quieter.

Don’t wait until you feel motivated.

Start where you are.

Your future self will be very glad you did.
